Brissago

Narrow alleyways and lush vegetation on the shores of Lake Maggiore

At only 197 m above sea level, Brissago is one of Switzerland's lowest-lying communities, with the mildest climate, and this is reflected in the colourful flowers and lush vegetation that you find wherever you go.

Brissago Islands

In the Botanical Gardens on the Brissago Islands alone, there are over 1500 different varieties of plants and flowers, some of them native to sub-tropical regions. People who love plants and flowers - and indeed any visitor - should not miss this oasis of nature, which is easily reached on a short boat ride.

As you wander along the lakeside promenade, you come to Brissago's most famous landmark, the "Centro Dannemann", a cigar factory that has been in existence since 1856 and is now the venue for many cultural events of international importance..

The wide, busy main street in Brissago, which is the last place before the Italian border, goes right through the village towards the border. It is lined with numerous small shops, restaurants and typical bars inviting you to while away a few moments. This is also where you'll find the local residents, sitting in the sun and observing the busy comings and goings over an espresso or a "vino rosso". Over the years, this picturesque Ticino village has spread out over the three hills facing the lake and, wherever you are, there are stunning views of Lake Maggiore.
